Well Chlorination

Professional Disinfection for Private Wells

Well chlorination — often called shock chlorination — is the standard method to kill bacteria in the well itself and in the household piping connected to it. It is not the same as pouring bleach down a sink: the disinfectant must be placed correctly, moved through the entire water system, held long enough to work, and then flushed out so your water is safe and pleasant to use again.

Klutz Well Drilling performs chlorination for homeowners and properties across North Manchester and surrounding Indiana communities. We combine field experience with accepted practice so your well, pump, and treatment components are handled with care.

When Chlorination Is Often Recommended

  • A water sample shows coliform bacteria or your lender or health department requests disinfection
  • The well cap, pitless adapter, or upper casing was disturbed, replaced, or repaired
  • The pump, drop pipe, or column was pulled for service and reinstalled
  • Floodwater reached near the well head or you suspect surface water entered the well
  • A new well or major plumbing change is being placed into service after construction

Why Use a Professional?

Address Bacterial Contamination

A positive coliform result means bacteria may be entering your system. Chlorination is a standard step to disinfect the well bore, water column, and connected piping.

Reach the Whole Plumbing Loop

Disinfection only works where chlorinated water actually flows. We help move treated water through lines, fixtures, and common dead legs — not just the well head.

Correct Strength and Contact Time

Too weak fails; too strong creates handling and disposal headaches. We work with concentrations and hold times suited to your well depth, volume, and equipment.

Clear Next Steps for Retesting

After flushing, a follow-up sample through a certified lab or your local health program confirms whether the well is ready for normal use again.

How It Works

01

Understand the Situation

We review lab paperwork, recent well work, flooding near the casing, or other triggers so the job matches why chlorination was recommended.

02

Introduce Chlorine Safely

We add disinfectant to the well in a controlled way, with attention to venting, equipment protection, and any treatment devices that need bypass or special handling.

03

Circulate and Hold

Water is drawn through the system to bring chlorinated water past the pressure tank, treatment equipment (as applicable), and taps — then held for the required contact period.

04

Flush and Guide Retesting

We flush until chlorine is cleared to safe use levels and explain when to collect a verification sample so you know the well is back on solid footing.

Beyond Chlorination

If problems return after disinfection, the well may need further evaluation. We also offer well inspections, well remediation, and ongoing water treatment options such as filtration.
